Keeping Our Waterways Safe

Just north of the Choctawhatchee Bay, Authentic Walton has several places to get out for a little fun on the water – including Lake DeFuniak, Lake Jackson, and of course the Bay itself. There’s also the 64-mile Choctawhatchee River Paddle Trail, which has been designated an official state Blueway. While these Walton County waterways are ideal for recreation, staying safe is always essential, whether you’re swimming, boating, fishing or paddleboarding.

Safe Swimming

Similar to the Gulf, swimming in the Choctawhatchee Bay requires some diligence to ensure your safety. Learn to recognize the signs of rip currents, such as darker, deeper water, murky brown water, and waves breaking further out to sea. Of course, being aware of currents always applies to rivers as well, especially when muddier water can conceal water hazards and entanglements like debris and fallen trees. While swimming further out in open water, utilize a personal floatation device and remain close to your boat. These basic guidelines also apply when swimming in a lake or even diving in popular spots like Morrison Springs. Whenever possible, designating a swim buddy helps ensure everyone has a personal lookout with them.

Safe Boating
Keep in mind that most safety requirements for boats start with good preparation. Before embarking, always ensure your boat is equipped for everyone onboard and you’re aware of Walton County life jacket requirements. Once you’re out on the water, it’s important to always have a strong sense of your surroundings and your location – especially on a very large body of water like the Bay. Make sure you have your destination planned in advance and know how to get there. Pay close attention to notable landmarks in order to chart your progress and keep your bearings.

As for river safety, when navigating channels or any narrower stretch of water, remember to treat it like a roadway, keeping to the right to ensure an organized flow of traffic. Practice proper boating etiquette and watch your wake when passing others. Give way to oncoming vessels when crossing in tighter spaces. Be mindful of other rules and regulations for boating, like designated speed limits and Walton County no-wake zones, especially in busier spots like marinas, docks, and swimming areas.

When it comes to weather conditions, be prepared for potential forecast changes, especially if you find yourself boating in a thunderstorm. If you get caught in severe weather, slow down, secure your boat, and make sure everyone is wearing life jackets.

With so many options for fun around the water, Authentic Walton is truly a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts. Just remember that a little preparation goes a long way toward helping keep Walton County waterways safe.
